The penis pic saga continues

The internet went into meltdown last week after Tommy Lee shared a clear picture of his drumstick with his 1.6 million followers, leaving many to question how it took Instagram so long to remove it.

“Ooooopppsss,” the 59-year-old wrote beneath the image, his genitals just there with no attempt to conceal. While Instagram did eventually take the image down, the damage had already been done and Lee’s penis pic was in just about every corner of the internet. He’s even received porn invitations.

But the viral moment has unearthed some very real differences between social media’s treatment of female and male bodies.

As one person on Twitter pointed out: “Women’s accounts get banned on #Instagram for just showing nipples and yet #TommyLee can post a full frontal dick pic and not get into trouble. The double standards.”

“So Tommy Lee can post a picture of his penis on @instagram that’s still up three hours later but a picture of my curvy booty in a thong bikini gets taken down? Cool, cool,” another said.

The Mötley Crüe drummer uploaded the image again, though this time stylised to look like art. His penis was still very much present and accounted for.

Lee has subsequently proved the point of the women above, as the picture still remains up despite it conflicting with the site’s rules.

“We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don’t allow nudity on Instagram,” Instagram’s own guidelines explain. “This includes photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks.”

The original pic is still circulating on Twitter as the platform has slightly different rules around nudity.
