‘Amy Winehouse was a once-in-a-generation talent, and I’m sorry for any hurt this image caused’

Neil Patrick Harris has apologised for a photo that recently resurfaced on social media that showed him making a graphic joke about Amy Winehouse just three months after her tragic death in 2011.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly on Monday, the 48-year-old stage and TV actor detailed how the photo was from a “Halloween-themed party” he and his husband, David Burtka hosted 11 years ago.

The image in question depicts the corpse of Amy Winehouse designed using food, which they had designed three months after the singer’s passing on July 27, 2011. A card describing the display said that it included “beef ribs, pulled pork, [and] chicken sausage in a spicy BBQ sauce.”

When Entertainment Weekly reached out for comment, Harris admitted: “It was regrettable then, and it remains regrettable now.

“Amy Winehouse was a once-in-a-generation talent, and I’m sorry for any hurt this image caused.”

The image was taken over a decade ago and originally posted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s husband Justin Mikita, who captioned the image: “Look who showed up @ActuallyNPH & @GourmetMD’s Halloween party last night. Looking good.”

Since resurfacing, the image has made the rounds on social media where one fan scathed: “Y’all, the Neil Patrick Harris/Amy Winehouse thing is even worse than it looks because that wasn’t a cake, it was a meat platter made to look like her dead body.”

“I can no longer enjoy a Series of Unfortunate Events on @netflix,” another former fan wrote. “And any of his further projects, because I just found out Neil Patrick Harris commissioned a cake of Amy Winehouse’s corpse for a Halloween party. Sub human behavior.”

“Neil Patrick Harris the male Ellen,” a third said.

Since apologising, social media chatter has not improved. “Neil Patrick Harris the male Ellen,” quipped one Twitter user, while another wrote, “How do you even do something like this???”
