Somewhat soft spoiler territory ahead, folks. Be warned…

Michael Waldron, the screenwriter behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ has addressed those rumours about Tom Cruise playing Iron Man – and it sounds like it isn’t entirely out of the multidimensional realms of possibility.

Not long ago, when the first trailer for the new Marvel film dropped, fans went wild when they thought they spotted not only a Deadpool cameo but also what looked to be a slightly Cruise-esque looking face in a metallic suit with energy beams shooting from their hands.

However, without touching on the new release too much at all, Waldron told Rolling Stone that while he jumped well onboard with the fan appeal – urging Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige to have the action-movie juggernaut enter the MCU in some fashion – he was simply never going to be in the Doctor Strange sequel because of schedule clashes.

Speaking on the theories put together following those brief snippets featured in the trailer, Waldron said: “Yeah, that was totally made up. I mean, there’s no cut footage of Tom Cruise! But I love Tom Cruise”.

He went on to reveal that he asked the Marvel president about the possibility of seeing him as an alternate Iron Man (not necessarily the Superior Iron Man variant fans had suspected) after having heard that the Top Gun star was once considered for the original role that Robert Downey Jr went on to define.

Waldron said that despite pursuing the idea, it was simply impossible as he was shooting, well, Mission Impossible 7 and 8 and doesn’t believe “it was ever an option because of availability.”

However, all that being said, this doesn’t mean that seeing Cruise as Iron Man or anyone in the Marvel universe isn’t necessarily mission impossible itself. Waldron was only discussing this most recent film and since the concept of the multiverse was blown wide open in Spider-Man: No Way Home, anything could happen.
