The comic made the comments during a recent episode of his podcast

Comedian Bill Burr has suggested that Johnny Depp will deserve public apologies if his ex-wife Amber Heard loses their ongoing defamation case which is currently in full swing.

Depp, 58, is suing Heard, 36, for $50m following an opinion piece that she wrote on the topic of domestic abuse for The Washington Post.

While the former Pirates of the Caribbean star was not specifically referenced in the piece, his lawyers claim it heavily implied that Depp was an abuser. In response, Heard is counter-suing her ex-husband for $100m claiming that Depp has smeared her name by calling her a liar.

The case is currently ongoing with Heard taking the stand earlier this week. Meanwhile, earlier today it was reported that outspoken US stand-up comic Burr, 53, had chimed in on the situation during an episode of his Monday Morning Podcast.

First covered in the outlet Mediaite and later in Variety, Burr suggested that Depp deserves a public apology if he’s found to be innocent. “I’m too big a Johnny Depp fan to watch [the trial]. I love that guy and I just — I don’t want to hear all these personal details and shit,” explained Burr.

“From what I’ve seen the guy is fucking destroying. And what’s great about this, is if he really does expose this woman for lying. I’m wondering if all these people that, you know, just accepted her lies about him if they’re going to apologize somehow.”

After noting that Depp had been “publicly trashed” he added that “it’d be nice if they publicly apologized and said, ‘Maybe next time we won’t jump to conclusions.’”

The King of Staten Island star then turned his attention to the wider cultural sphere and alleged inconsistencies within social movements when covering notable events.

“It really does amaze me how the pendulum just does not seem to swing the other way,” Burr continued.

“All of these women’s groups that when they see a woman that lies like this, which really hurts their position, because there are women out there that are in a relationship that this woman evidently lied and claimed that she was in. And for someone to go out and lie about it, it hurts the people that are actually in it! You would think they would cover this.”

Depp and Heard’s court case is expected to end on Thursday May 19.
